Welcome to the Auto Xpert Journal. We're a small, obsessive automotive protection and customization shop in Belmont, California, and this is where we put down what we've learned from a decade of tinting, wrapping, coating, and protecting cars that drive Peninsula roads every day.

If you've landed here, you probably care about your vehicle more than average. Maybe you just picked up a new car and don't want the first rock chip on 101 to wreck your week. Maybe your black car has been baking under Bay Area sun for three summers and the paint is screaming for help. Maybe you manage a fleet of service vans and you're tired of paying to repaint logos twice a year. Wherever you're starting from — this journal is written for you.

What we do at our Belmont shop

Auto Xpert installs and services six core specialties out of our bay at 1290 Old County Rd in Belmont, serving drivers across the Peninsula and Bay Area:

Every install happens in our climate-controlled bay. We don't send work out. The person who consults with you is the person who inspects the car when you pick it up.

Who we're built for

Our repeat customers tend to fall into four buckets, and most of what we write here is going to speak to one of them directly:

The commuter

You drive 280, 101, or the Dumbarton every weekday. You've been dealing with rock chips, sun bake, and the occasional errant shopping cart. You want to protect your car without turning it into a project.

The enthusiast

You're keeping this car. Whether it's an M3, a 911, a Tesla Plaid, or a Tacoma you've been modifying since 2019, you want the paint to look as good at year five as it does today. You're often deciding between PPF, ceramic, or both.

The lease driver

You want the car to come back clean at turn-in. Light ceramic coating and strategic PPF on high-wear zones saves you real money at lease-end charges.

The fleet / commercial customer

You run service vans, delivery vehicles, or a branded fleet around the Peninsula — Belmont, Redwood City, San Mateo, San Carlos, Burlingame, Foster City. You need consistent wraps and reliable commercial tinting across a dozen vehicles, and you need it scheduled so your operation keeps moving.

Why we're starting this journal

Most of the questions we answer in the consultation are the same questions, week after week. Is my tint legal? Will ceramic coating stop rock chips? How often do I need to reapply a topper? Does PPF turn yellow?

Rather than repeat ourselves, we'd rather write the real answer once and have it live here, with photos, pricing ranges, and recommendations tied to actual Bay Area driving conditions. If you're about to make a protection decision and you want our honest take — read these articles first and bring your questions to the consultation.

What's in the pipeline

The first round of articles is already live:

Coming up next: a Tesla-specific protection guide (every Tesla we see has the same paint-softness problem), a comparison of the three major PPF brands we install, and a commercial window tint case study from a Redwood City property manager.
